Melasma or pigmentation spots — what’s the difference?
Laser| 이나연| Posting update : 2026.05.11
Many people wonder whether the brown spots they see in the mirror are melasma or simple pigmentation. Although they may look similar, the causes and treatment methods are actually different.
Melasma occurs when melanin pigment settles
deep within the epidermis and dermis. It usually appears as broad patches with
blurred borders around the cheeks, forehead, and nose. Because it is strongly
affected by UV exposure and hormonal changes, it often becomes darker after the
age of 40.
Pigmented spots, on the other hand, are
commonly caused by sun exposure or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and
usually have more defined borders than melasma.
The most important difference is the depth of the pigment. Melasma extends deeper into the dermis, making it difficult to improve with skincare products alone. For visible improvement, laser treatments combined with consistent skin care are usually recommended.
At She’s Plastic Surgery Clinic, the Tone-Up Package combines IPL or laser toning to improve melasma, pigmentation, and freckles, together with skin boosters and hyaluronic acid treatments. This program helps improve pigmentation while also hydrating and rejuvenating the skin at the same time.
⏱ Treatment time: approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes
With 25 years of anti-aging experience, the medical team at She’s Plastic Surgery Clinic will recommend the most suitable treatment plan based on your skin condition.
